Education of the Spirit

By PASTOR LUIS CARTAGENA,

Throughout our lives we are becoming more educated in many ways. Perhaps we attend university where we learn culture in general, trades and professions to someday achieve a diploma that shows we are qualified to work professionally. However, that is only an aspect of our being and does not imply or constitute the education of the spirit that is part of each of us as well.
As in school education, we need to be spiritually educated to come to the knowledge and understanding of divine love. For a Christian it is necessary to follow the direction that God has pointed out in the Bible to become loyal disciples of Jesus Christ. That is the way one attains the privilege of the dimensions that discipleship affords those who once lived far from God. “And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.” (Ephesians 2 :17 – 19 ESV)
Reality tells us that we can’t speak of God as love until we truly accept and understand the revelation that came through Jesus. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 ESV) Only on the Cross can we see the dimension that love has as the supreme evidence of his love. The Cross does not show us goodness or compassion, but the way to redemption and the forgiveness of our sins.
Spiritual education teaches us to come to understand the love we can have for someone else is the same love Jesus Christ has for them, because only through Him can we love others. It is through Jesus Christ that we learn to express that spiritual love, and that takes time. Many people believe that doing good to others is the key but they are wrong, since charity done only with goodwill is not love. Love does not seek reward, pleasure, personal benefit or praise for ourselves. This is the reason why we must educate our spirit and the best Master is the Holy Spirit whom Jesus bequeathed to us and it is there that the origin of true love is found. “In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him” By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.” (1 John 4:4 and 9 ESV)
May God bless you.
