A “Protection of Children” workshop will be held on Saturday, October 7, at the Excel Learning Center in Morton. The 10:00-11:00 a.m. workshop is designed both for child care providers and all who have children within their care, and also for the general public. A Certificate of Participation will be presented to all those who attend.
Celebrating 150 years, the First Baptist Church of Lake will hold morning service followed by a potluck lunch Sunday, October 8 at 10:30 a.m. FBC is located at 80 S. Main St. in Lake.
Unity Assembly of God at 5046 Ringgold Rd. will celebrate Homecoming and Pastor’s Appreciation Day on Octboer 8. Adam Boykin will be the special guest speaker. There will also be singing and a luncheon.
CMRLS Libraries will be closed Monday, October 9, in observance of Columbus Day. Regular Library hours will resume on Tuesday, October 10. All online resources will be available at cmrls.lib.ms.us while your library is closed, Central Mississippi Regional Library System serves the public libraries of Rankin, Scott, Simpson, and Smith Counties.
The Excel Learning Center in Morton invites people to an evening outdoors, under the sky, to learn more about the planets, stars, and constellations. On Monday, October 9, the group will gather with presenter Billy Mack Miles, retired instructor of physics and astronomy at East Central Community College, to learn more about the night skies. Using a telescope, one can see star clusters and distant galaxies.
“Knowing Your Way Around the Night Skies” will begin at the Excel Learning Center, 383 South Fourth Street, Morton, at 7:00 p.m. From there, everyone will drive themselves, caravan style, to our destination in the country, a mile from town. All are advised to bring insect repellent, wear old clothes, and bring a flashlight/cell phone. If skies are overcast, and/or if weather is bad, this event will be postponed to another time.
A benefit concert for Luke Potratz’s treatment of OCD will be held Thursday, October 12 from 6-9 p.m. at Sandridge Barn at 22411 Hwy. 80 in Lake. The concert will feature Nashville recording artists, Ronnie McDowell, Amber Hayes, and Jeff Bates. Auctions start at 6 and musical entertainment begins at 7. Burger, chips, and drinks will be for sale. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased through Jackie Calhoun, 601-331-5187. Kids under 12 may enter free.
Lackey Memorial Hospital will begin selling raffle tickets to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation and to promote breast cancer awareness. The winner will receive a gift basket with a $180 value which contains a decorative ceramic plate, gourmet coffee with coffee mug, bath bombs, scented wax warmer and wax, body wash, and additional spa and decorative items. Tickets can be purchased at Forest City Hall and at Lackey Memorial Hospital in the medical records building and billing office. Tickets are $2 for one or $5 for three. The winner will be drawn on Friday, Oct. 20.
Scott Regional Hospital will have a Gigantic Garage Sale on Thursday, October 12th, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday, October 13th, 8 a.m. to 12 noon, at the Scott Regional Hospital Administration Building located behind the hospital. There will be many items available including clothes, household items, toys, books, baby items, decorative items, seasonal items, and more. Proceeds will be used to enhance the patients’ experience and hospital projects.
The East MS Greys SCV Camp 1666 will have at its October 16 meeting Mr. Al Arnold, family historian and author. The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Forest Community Center.
Forest Baptist Church will host a fundraiser for Center of Hope on Tuesday, October 17 at 6:15 p.m. Table Hosts are $225, which include 8 tickets. Individual tickets are $30. The money raised will help fund Center of Hope this year. The guest speaker will be Kirk Walden from Nashville.
The Excel Learning Center in Morton will offer Crocheting classes beginning on Tuesday, October 17. The crocheting class will meet five Thursday evenings, Oct. 10 to Nov. 14, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Adults and teens are invited to sign up for the class. With this beautiful needlework skill, participants will crochet a receiving blanket, a scarf, or other item. Liz Edmondson of Forest will be the instructor. Pink Awareness Walk hosted by Scott County Girl Scout Service Unit will be held at Gaddis Park on October 21 at 8:00 a.m. Registration deadline for a t-shirt is Oct. 6. Participants can also register the day of the walk. For more information contact April Jennings at 601-900-7206.
Forest Country Club will host a fundraiser tournament for Kenyan orphans in partnership with One:Ten Vision Ministries and Embrace Church of Forest on October 21, starting at 9 a.m. There will be cash prizes for winners and a zero-turn mower for a hole-in-one. The tournament will be two-man team tournament with a $250 entry fee. Holes can be sponsored for $250. The deadline for sponsorship is October 9.
