Joining them were great-niece Mary, Shawn, John, and baby Ann Aitkin from Zionsville; Carol Willey from Atlanta, Georgia; Joe, Thomas, and Nelita Rose Willey from Athens, Georgia; and Dan, Wonny, and Hannah Willey from Morgan City, California. They enjoyed seeing the Christmas lights at the Indianapolis Zoo, attending church together on Christmas Eve, playing in the snow, and family visiting.
Gayla and Shane Steed of Memphis, Tennessee, accompanied by Larie and Nelson Kaye, arrived on Wednesday for a Christmas visit in the home of her parents, Barbara and Lamar Gatewood.
Noah Wyatt Lovett was born to Ashley and Jeffrey Lovett on December 27. He weighs 8 lbs. 8 oz. and is 20 inches. He is welcomed by big brothers, Cale and Jack; grandparents, Jimmy and Kim Shaw; grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Lovett; and aunt and uncles, Mandy Knight, Brandon Shaw, and Allen Lovett. Congratulations all!!
The Martins had a three-day Christmas celebration beginning with Irene, Steve, Karon, Mary and Tara meeting Russell on Friday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and spending the day at the zoo. After Christmas Eve supper and gifts exchange, they joined several other families on Christmas Day for the annual get-together of a meal and fellowship at the home of Grace Russell.
Jim McCormick of Atlanta, Georgia, spent several recent days in Forest.
Rhett Mitchell visited with friends in Forest last week, before packing for his Christmas holiday with family and friends in North Carolina.
Local friends will be saddened to learn of the Christmas Eve passing of long time Forest resident, Doris Hydrick.
Lamar Gatewood was taken to Baptist Hospital in Jackson last week, spending Christmas Eve and Day there...Glad he is back home and doing well.
Ron and Mary Jo Walsh enjoyed a family get together on December 23rd. Ashley, Jonathan, Gavin and Fisher McCain of Brandon, Christin, Christopher, Ferran and Elin Yax, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Lauren Leiden, of Memphis, Tennessee, had a great time catching up during dinner, and then let the little cousins decorate cookies at Nannie and Papaw Walshs. On the 24th, Justin Leiden joined the Yaxs’ and his sister, Lauren for Christmas Eve dinner and a family game night. On Christmas Day the Yax, with Justin and Lauren, left for Ocean Springs to spend the remainder of the holidays with their mother, Kelly, and the children’s Grandma Jeannie. Santa found the children in Ocean Springs the morning of the 26th. On Christmas afternoon, Steven Leiden of Greenville, South Carolina, visited with his grandparents before leaving the 26th for a big family Christmas in Ocean Springs. Kelly was surrounded by her four children, two grandchildren and son-in-law, Christopher Yax. And a blessed time was had by all!
The great grandson of the late Maybeth Ormond, and the great nephew of the late Joyce Red were two members of the Dixie World Series All Star Baseball Team invited by the the Mayor of Fairhope, Alabama, to be on stage New Years Eve as the team was recognized for the accomplishments of winning District, State, and the World Series. Steele, son of Terry and Merridy McKibbens Sims, and Gatlin, son of Mike and Stephanie Ashmore Pitts, were among the All Star teammates invited to lead the count down (as the ball dropped) to ring in the new year! Proud grandparents are former Forest residents Jim and Beverly McKenzie Ashmore and Ben and Loren Ormond McKibbens.
Ringing in the New Year was another fun way to celebrate their most memorable winning season. Congratulations, boys!!
Irene Martin’s New Years Day tradition includes black-eyed peas, hog jowl and usually sipping hot chocolate with enough fireworks to equal sizable cities.
New Year's Eve she rings the l50-plus year old bell in the yard. Always twelve bells at midnight; however, she confesses that in the last few years, she has rung it EST!! For many years, Irene was playing somewhere New Year's Eve; and every year, at 11:58 pm, she would wonder, “What key do I play ‘Auld Lang Syne’???”
We hope 2018 is kind to us all — and especially Happy New Year to you and yours!!!
